Self-Drive: Discover Nicaragua

This leisurely self-drive adventure allows you to explore the country's best spots in depth. There is so much to see and do in this amazingly diverse Latin American country that you will appreciate the extra time to visit nature reserves, colonial cities and the amazing volcanic regions of the country - and there is some beach time too.

ManaguaDay 1: Managua – Transfer to Hotel

Arrival at Managua Airport. Transfer to your hotel located just across the International Airport where you will receive your travel documents at the front desk. The rest of the day is at your disposal to enjoy the facilities offered by the hotel and rest after your flight.

Day 2: Managua – León Viejo - León

Breakfast. Around 8:30am a representative of the car rental company will pick you up at your hotel to complete the formalities. Once you have taken possession of yout car you can start your trip to the most impressive destinations of the country. Start towards the north, along Lake Managua, with impressive vistas of Momotombo volcano. On the way you can stop to visit León Viejo, the first city built in Nicaragua, which was soon abandoned after it was destroyed by a violent volcanic eruption and an earthquake. Arriving in the 'new' León, we suggest checking in at your hotel and taking a stroll around the colonial city on your own.

Day 3: León –San Jacinto boiling mud pools – Matagalpa – Selva Negra

Start early to make the most of your day’s drive. Head towards the hot springs of San Jacinto, which bear testimony of the powerful volcanic activity in the region. Then, you will drive from the tropical dry area to a mixed vegetation zone of the Nicaragua's mountain range. The town of Matagalpa is one of the biggest centers for coffee and you will see numerous coffee processing facilities. The road winds uphill to reach your next destination, the resort of Selva Negra. We recommend going for a walk on one of the many trails around the lodge.

Day 4: Selva Negra – Masaya Volcano National Park - Granada

You can feel free to visit the farm on your own, exploring the rural life of the area. During your drive back to the Pacific area, you will notice the climatic differences of the region. On the way to your next destination, make a trip to the Masaya volcano National Park. From the craters edge, you can watch the fumes rise Santiago crater. After this fascinating visit continue to explore the Famous 'White Towns' of Catarina, famous for its ornamental plants, and San Juan de Oriente, well known for its pottery artisans. In the late afternoon you will reach the colonial city of Granada.

Day 5: Free Day in Granada

Take your time visiting Granada, one of the oldest colonial towns of the Americas. Enjoy the architecture and monuments of the historic district on foot, or by horse carriage. Or, drive to the beautiful Laguna de Apoyo and enjoy a delicious meal served at one of the many little restaurants along the shore; here you can also enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear waters of the lagoon.

Isletas

Day 6: Free Day in Granada

Enjoy the charming colonial town or take an excursion to the “Isletas”, or the Mombacho Cloud Forest, an eroded volcano covered with beautiful orchids, bromeliads, ferns, likens and all different kind of tropical plants and one of 76 protected areas of Nicaragua.

Playa Santo DomingoDay 7: Granada – San Jorge – Moyogalpa – Playa Santo Domingo

Start early in the morning to follow the famous Pan-American Highway to the little port of San Jorge, located on the great Nicaragua Lake. The ferry will take you (and your vehicle) to the island of Ometepe. On route to Playa Santo Domingo you will pass several colorful villages, as well as Altagracia, one of the biggest town, observing the daily life of its inhabitants.

Day 8: Playa Santo Domingo – Volcano Madera’s - Playa Santa Domingo

Explore the area around Madera’s volcano, passing the small villages of Baldü and San Ramon. The route around the volcano is only passible during the dry season.

Day 9: Playa Santo Domingo – Moyogalpa – San Jorge – San Juan del Sur

Drive around Concepción volcano to reach Moyogalpa, the main town of the island. From there you will take the ferry back to the mainland and drive to the famous resort town of San Juan del Sur. After spending some time exploring the town and sampling some succulent fish at one of the numerous restaurants on the beach promenade, you can continue driving further north to visit one of the beaches on the Pacific Ocean, like Playa Marsella or Playa Majagual. Return to San Juan del Sur.

La FlorDay 10: San Juan del Sur - Playa del Coco – Playa La Flor – El Ostional – San Juan del Sur

Take a drive to the Natural Reserve of Playa La Flor, located a few kilometers from Playa del Coco. La Flor is famous as a sea turtle nesting site. During the rainy season, between July and December, one can observe the 'arribadas' when great numbers of sea turtles come to the shore to lay their eggs. The reserve protects rare tropical dry forest and its inhabitants. You can continue a little further to the small town of El Ostional before returning to San Juan del Sur.

Day 11: San Juan del Sur – Managua

Drive back to the capital on any route you choose.You can stop at Masaya, if you plan to do some shopping for Nicaraguan handicrafts, or drive through the impressive landscapes of La Concepción on a less travelled road of the region.
