Sacred Earth Travel - Iceland: Self-Drive Iceland Highland Adventure 7 days

Cross the highland on the route Kjölur and drive the black sands of Sprengisandur. This itinerary is ideal for those who want to explore the interior of Iceland.

Arrival day: Upon arrival at the airport, a representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Reykjavik (this night's accommodation must be booked separately, it is not included in the package price).

Day 1: The South.

Explore Iceland's famous circle of wonders "The Golden Circle", i.e. þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot spring area.
Driving Distance: approx. 160km
Accommodation for the first night will be in the area.

Day 2: Kjölur

Today you will cross the highland in the north direction on the route Kjölur. You will drive a plateau between two large glaciers, Langjökull and Hofsjökull. Stop by the geothermal area Hveravellir.
Driving Distance: approx. 160km.
Accommodation will be in Skagaförður area.

Days 3 and 4: The North

Head for Lake Mývatn and explore the many wonders of the area. On the second day, you could go on a day tour to Askja volcano, a highland favourite. Drive through the vast lava terrains via Herðubreiðalindir. A dip in the geothermal pool at the crater Víti is a treat.
Driving Distance: approx. 240 km travelled
Accommodation for two nights in Mývatn area.

Day 5: Sprengisandur

Drive the black sands of Sprengisandur back South, with rough tracks as well as crossing unbridged and unpredictable rivers. In Nýjadal, it is ideal to have a lunch break and walk in the green valley.
Driving Distance: approx. 200km
Accommodation for this night is simple and on the outskirts of the desert.

Days 6 and 7: Landmannalaugar, The South

Drive to Landmannalaugar. After lunch you will drive Fjallabaksleið towards Eldgjá to Kirkjubæjarklaustur, where you will stay for the next two nights. For the second day the schedule is to go on a day trip to Lakagígar. It is a 25 km row of volcanic fissure that erupted in 1783.
Driving Distance: approx. 100km
Accommodation on the last night in Reykjavik at a hotel of your choice (optional - not included in package price)

The rooms in Farmhouses, Farm Guesthouses and Country Hotels can be of four different cagetories:

I	These rooms are simple, comfortable and adequate. The beds are made up and rooms cleaned daily. Clean towels are supplied. Guests have access to communal sitting room. Breakfast included.
II	In addition to category I, all rooms have hand basins and are generally of a higher standard and better equipped. Breakfast included.
III	In addition to categories I and II, rooms have private bathroom. These rooms can be in farmhouses, guesthouses and cottages. Breakfast included.
IV	Rooms with private facilities in country hotels. Better equipped with TV, radio and sometimes coffee making facilities. Breakfast included.

All but the Country Hotels may have shared or private facilities. Country Hotels always offer the highest standard and have private facilities.
