PANAMA QUICKLINKS:

Sea-kayaking the Kuna Kingdom and Hiking the Meso-American Biological Corridor, Panama

TROPICAL CARIBBEAN SEA KAYAKING

San Blas paradise The strong, united Kuna Indigenous Tribes have managed to keep their territory untouched by the growing tourism industry. Here in the archipelago tourism is not fully developed, providing the visitor with the opportunity to fully enjoy and experience the Caribbean coast and the Kuna culture. This unique archipelago is home to many different Kuna communities; fortunately we are welcomed to visit the Comarca (territory). This rich region of the country is also the natural habitat to a great variety of wildlife such as giant river otters, crocodiles, dolphins, sea turtles, large reef tropical fish, rays, birds and much more.

Most of the days we will enjoy paddling in the morning to take advantage of calmer seas and allowing time in the afternoon to explore the unique ecosystem around the campgrounds. We will be able to look for tropical fish, sponges, lobsters, turtles and other sea life native to the area. This unique itinerary allows the visitor to combine paddling and snorkeling right next to their campsite, which will be relocated every 1-2 days, giving them the opportunity to discover and explore the archipelago. A support motor boat also joins the group.

PREPARING PHYSICALLY FOR THE TRIP

To make this an enjoyable trip you must be in fairly good shape and health. Kayaking with the Kuna is designed for flexible, active, energetic, and positive people who have sense for the spirit of adventure. This trip is for intermediate and experienced paddlers. Beginners who have had experience paddling for a couple of days in a row and are in good shape and health are also welcomed. During the days we will paddle for three to six hours with some rest stops. Normally the paddling is moderately strenuous, but if the winds begin to pick up, short strenuous paddling can be expected to get to a calmer area. The hikes are moderate (optional) that go along easy paths or riverbeds.

If you would like to de a pre-trip fitness plan, we recommend moderate aerobic activities for at least 30 minutes a session three times a week for two months before you leave. Also you should concentrate on physical exercises that work on the abdomen, lower and upper back muscles, and the shoulder muscles. The better physical condition you are in better you will enjoy your kayaking vacation. We recommend that you check with your doctor before beginning a new fitness program. All participants must sign a Waiver and Release Form before the trip begins.
