La Amistad Biosphere Reserve has been threatened in recent years due to encroaching development, deforestation and destructive land use. The Wekso Ecolodge generates income for approximately 20 Naso community families, providing them with ecologically friendly employment, and helps them maintain their cultural values. Wekso also generates resources for the protection of the natural resources of La Amistad, and has generated a higher level of awareness among the Naso community members, in respect to protecting the ecosystems as well as the plants and animals within them.
The Naso Indians have retained their own language, and due to expressed concerns of the loss of tribal traditions from older members, the community has taken steps to revitalize their fading traditions. An example of this is the Shaman's Apprentice Program, which encourages indigenous people to preserve the knowledge of traditional medicine and transfer it to younger generations. Handicrafts are also made by local community members.
Transfer from Bocas del Toro to the Wekso Community by boat from El Silencio. This river is usually navigated by the traditional wooden boats with small outboard engines. Admire the beautiful scenery. Once you arrive at Wekso community the local host will show you your bungalow cabin and will introduce you to the community. Here, you will have the opportunity to watch birds and view other wildlife in an area full of tropical species. The forest around the ecolodge is a convergence point for 75% of all migratory birds in the Western Hemisphere and is home to unique species such as the Harpy Eagle, the Quetzal and the Giant Anteater.
Enjoy the nature and share the primitive lifestyle of the Naso people. Today you can hike the trails around the community. A loop trail starts in Wekso and goes up through Naso villages adjacent to La Amistad International Park. It is a wonderful cultural experience to visit the villages and learn about their culture and customs. The return to the main lodge is an exciting whitewater rafting trip down the beautiful Teribe River.
You will have time to purchase beautiful and original handcrafts and your contribution helps to maintain their traditional lifestyle. Wekso also generates funding for the protection of the natural resources of La Amistad, and has generated a higher level of awareness among the Naso community members, in respect to protecting the ecosystems as well as the plants and animals within them.
