hiking1.jpg (26K)This tour package features a daylong trip through the Panama Canal starting at the Pacific and ending in the Atlantic. You will be accompanied by an expert guide who will explain in detail the Canal's fascinating history - from the French's attempts to build a sea level canal, through the final days of the U.S. project. You will stay at the luxurious Gamboa Rainforest Resort, constructed on the banks of the Chagres River located near Lake Gatun at the mid-point of the Panama Canal. Here you are surrounded by lush tropical forest, yet only 45 minutes from Panama City.

DAY 1: Arrive Panama

Arrive at Panama International Airport, where you will be met by our driver and taken to your hotel in Panama City. Overnight stay at hotel in the city. (No meals.)

DAY 2: Panama City

Depart from the hotel to visit Panama Viejo, the first city founded in the isthmus by Spanish conquerors at the beginning of colonization. The remaining ruins are the vestiges left by Pirate Henry Morgan, who sacked the town in 1671. Then we will head to the second colonial city of Panama, Casco Viejo, built in 1673 and will walk around the French Plaza and monuments around and you will witness a place where pirates and conquistadors once fought for wealth and power on the Path between the oceans. The architecture of this area is exquisite including French, Italian and Spanish styles. The last stop will be at the Miraflores Locks to witness the workings of the Panama Canal. Departure time: 9:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. Duration: 4 -5 hours (B)

DAY 3: Panama Canal Transit

Today one of our drivers will meet you in the hotel lobby for an early morning transfer to Balboa Harbor on the Pacific side of the canal. There you will board a Panamanian vessel for a Canal Transit. As you approach the canal, you will be able to observe the Bridge of the Americas. Breakfast and snacks are included while you are aboard the ship. An English-speaking guide is onboard the ferry and will narrate the dramatic history of the building of the Panama Canal, which was completed by the US between 1904 and 1914. A full crossing is scheduled for this Saturday, allowing you to enjoy the cruise all the way to Colon City on the Caribbean Coast. You will reach Colon around 5:00 PM and return to Panama City by bus in the late afternoon. Spend the night at the hotel. (BL)

DAY 4: Soberania National Park & Gamboa Resort

Depart from your hotel early in the morning for a sightseeing tour in the rainforest at Soberania National Park. You will have the opportunity to observe birds, mammals and the tropical rainforest at its best. Check in at hotel Gamboa Rainforest Resort Villas. Overnight at Gamboa Rainforest Resort. (B)

DAY 5: Gamboa Rainforest Resort

Day at leisure exploring the area on your own, or relaxing in the hotel's spa, pool or on Gatun Lake. Optional tours include: Arial tram, night tours, birding tours, kayaking, fishing. (B)

DAY 6: Depart Panama

Transfer to the international airport approximately two hours before your flight's scheduled departure time. (B)
