Tortuguero National Park and Selva Bananito

Day 1:

Canal Cruise in Tortuguero National ParkEarly in the morning you will be picked up at your hotel in San José. After a scenic drive through Braulio Carillo National Park you will stop for a typical breakfast. The journey continues through spacious banana plantations to Matina, where you will take a boat. Cruising on rivers and canals you can observe animals. 2 ½ hours later, you will arrive at the lodge and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, take a walk along the beach to the small village of Tortuguero and visit the Caribbean Conservation Center, dedicated to the protection of endangered sea turtles. There will still be time to enjoy a drink in Tortuguero, before you head back to the lodge for dinner. After dinner and only between July and September, you can partake in an optional night walk along the beach in order to observe sea turtles as they are laying their eggs in the sand.

Day 2:

After breakfast it's time to discover Tortuguero National Park. Observe crocodiles, monkeys, sloths, turtles, iguanas and many different species of birds as you glide down the narrow canals. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon you can decide either to hike through the jungle or, weather permitting, to the Tortuguero hill, from where you enjoy a great view over the canals and the sea. Return to the lodge, dinner and overnight.

Day 3:

After breakfast on the third day, you will return to Matina by boat. From here you will be transferred to Bananito, where a representative of Selva Bananito Lodge will pick you up. After a welcome drink and lunch you have some time to relax in a hammock, or to book an optional tour (not included). You can climb a huge jungle tree next to the lodge or an even higher one 15 minutes walking from the lodge. If you make it to the top, you will enjoy a beautiful view over the area. The first day ends with a romantic candlelight dinner in the restaurant of the lodge.

Day 4:

Selva BananitoToday it's time to discover the amazing rainforest with your local guide. The natural history trail takes about 2 hours and you will be back at the lodge for lunch. Depending on your physical condition, you can choose a longer trip to a waterfall at extra charge. Hiking to the waterfall and back takes about 6 hours and you will enjoy a box lunch on the way. For those looking for an additional adventure, you can upgrade the tour to the waterfall at an extra charge and that you will have to help carrying the equipment. For the rest of the day, you can either relax, observe birds from your terrace or from the restaurant or book another optional activity (at extra charge). Mountainbikes and horses are available for hire. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5:

In the morning it's time to drive back to Bananito by 4-wheel-drive, where the collective bus (Interbus) will pick you up for your return journey to San José. Included meals today: breakfast

NOTE: This tour includes only the 2-hours natural history trail hike at Selva Bananito Lodge. All other excursions and horseback riding must be booked and paid for at the lodge.

The rates for superior room refers to accommodations at Selva Bananito Lodge. At Mawamba Lodge, the room category will always be standard.

With Laguna Lodge a supplement of US$15 per person (minimum 2 pax) applies for private transportation between Guápiles and Bananito.
