A very special nature experience! Silently navigate through the canals, rivers and lagoons of Tortuguero National Park, exploring the amazing natural diversity.

Day 1

In the morning you will be picked up in your hotel in San José. Together with other tourists you drive through Braulio Carillo National Park towards the Caribbean. Near Guápiles a typical breakfast is served, then you continue your journey through wide banana plantations until reaching the starting point for today's adventure at the Tortuguero National Park Ranger Station. After a short briefing to become familiarized with kayaks, gear and safety issues, you will start paddling down the river. Lunch will be served amidst the tropical forest. Afterwards, you continue the tour and arrive at Mawamba Lodge in the late afternoon. Welcome-cocktail, dinner and overnight in the lodge.

Day 2

After breakfast you will be shuttled by boat about 25 miles towards the Colorado River, passing through Penitencia Canal until you arrive at Samay Lagoon. Here you will board your kayaks for a 3-4 hour exploration of this area. The magical entrance to Laguna Nueve and a brief visit to the beach will be some of today's highlights. Wonderful clean water and total solitude will be an impressing experience. Lunch is served at the site. In the late afternoon you will return to Mawamba Lodge, dinner and overnight in the lodge.

Day 3

There are several options for today's paddle. You can visit Caño Palma Biological Station or paddle to the Tortuguero hills and take a hike up there. Lunch at Mawamba Lodge. In the afternoon you can choose one of the tours or just relax at the swimming pool of the hotel. Dinner and overnight in the lodge. From aprox. July until September you can book an optional night tour to the beach (not included), where every year the big Green Sea Turtles lay their eggs into the sand.

Day 4

After breakfast you board a boat for the return trip to Matina. Here, a bus will already wait for you to bring you back to San José. Lunch is served on the way.

Options & Combinations

Additional nights can be booked on request. A 3 days / 2 nights package is also available, which skips the 3rd day of the program.

Option 1) flight back to San José and connection to all SANSA flights: Instead of traveling back to San José by land, you book a flight with SANSA. Thanks to the very early operation of this flight, you have connection to all SANSA destinations departing after 08.00am.
Option 2) with Selva Bananito Lodge or hotels on the Caribbean coast There are two possibilities:: a) You take the regular transfer back to San José included in this package, but you get out at Hotel Río Palmas or Hotel Suerre, where you need to book an overnight. Please note that in this case lunch on the last day will not be included. The next morning you will be picked up by collective bus (Interbus) and drive to Bananito (connection to Selva Bananito Lodge) or to any hotel on the Caribbean coast.; b) You take the regular transfer included in this package back to Matina, where we will pick you up with a private transfer and drive you to the hotel of your choice.
