Caraibbean Coast

Day 2: San José – Caribbean Coast

Pick up your booked rental and drive through Braulio Carrillo National Park into the northern low-lands towards the Caribbean Coast. You may get to get a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean while driving just drive straight ahead following the motorway till you reach this wonderful destination. Once there, you will learn about all the things that our beautiful sandy beaches have to offer. A beach vacation is supposed to be completely relaxing, then while you make up your mind you can park yourself under a shade umbrella, catch a few rays and read some magazines, or your latest acquired book. Otherwise, enjoy the wonderful landscapes.

Day 3: Caribbean Beach

Why don’t you find a quiet and solitary spot at the beach? You will definitively enjoy having some time and space for yourself. Alternatively, you can go and explore the Gandoca Manzanillo Reserve; where doing some snorkeling and scuba diving will give you the opportunity to see manatees, dolphins and gorgonians.

Day 4: Limón – Selva Bananito

Hit the highway and head in a southerly direction to the small village of Bananito. Once there, you will have to keep your speed down on the adventurous bumpy road that leads to Selva Bananito Lodge. Although the distance from Bananito to the lodge is just 17 km, you need to calculate some time for this off-road adventure. You will cross four rivers, narrow roads and cattle fields before you finally reach this exciting destination. There you will have the experience of being secluded and in harmony with the surrounding rain forest. A personal code to Access the lodge property by car will be provided. (4-wheel car necessary).

Day 5: Selva Bananito Lodge

Optional local activities. Choose between horseback, hiking, abseiling, canopy line, night hikes; or learn about medical usage of plants and how the indigenous people used to live.

Day 6: Bananito – Limón – Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí

The journey takes you back into the northern low-lands where you will explore the real countryside. The Sarapiquí area is a real nature treasure where you will get to uncover many of the tropical secrets of the jungle amongst many other activities.

Day 7: Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí

Time for optional local activities. You can pay a visit to La Tirimbina for a cultural and natural experience in the chocolate tour. Otherwise you can take advantage of a healthy walk to see wildlife. Bring your binoculars they will never leave your face!

Day 9: Boca Tapada

As an option we recommend to do a hike in the Rainforest as well as a boat tour or kayak tour on the San Carlos River. This is a virgin area of natural forest where many animals are repeatedly seen.

Day 10: Boca Tapada – La Fortuna

Drive back to Pital and reach La Fortuna via Aguas Zarcas and Muelle. We highly recommend a hike by the old lava fields of the volcano (entry fee to the national park is 10 USD per person). The fantastic view of the volcano over Lake Arenal is something you won’t be able to forget. A variety of tours are run in the region and they will definitively take you around some of the most stunning venues around La Fortuna; for instance: Ecocentro Danaus with its butterfly garden, the plantations of medicinal, and a visit to the waterfall La Fortuna, where you’ll have the chance to take a refreshing dive. A must see during a Costa Rica vacation is the Arenal Volcano. Weather permitting; you will wake up to a titanic view of the volcano. Give yourself a treat and try the relaxing mineral hot springs.

Day 12: La Fortuna - Monteverde

A picturesque journey around the northern shore of Arenal Lake awaits you today on your way to the cloud forest. Continue driving up into the mountains to reach Monteverde. This place is famous for its cloud forest, pleasant temperatures and for its many tourism attractions such as a butterfly garden, their hummingbird gallery, their snake museum, hanging bridges, canopy tours and much more. When you perceive that the road starts to crack beneath your wheels and you can see potholes all around it is a sign that you’re soon to reach the village of Nuevo Arenal. Continue to the northern part of Lake Arenal. You’ll be able to admire the wind farm in the horizon- a dazzling vision of a clean energy future! Once in Tilarán, start driving to Monteverde / Santa Elena. You will notice that the remaining road is in quite poor condition, especially after heavy rainfalls. A longer route first leads you to Las Juntas or Cañas and from there you’ll find yourself on a 35km-long-bumpy road to Monteverde.

Transfer time:

A 1.5- to 2-hour drive from San José (Juan Santamaría International Airport). Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí is just 15 minutes away, La Virgen, the next village, 7 km.

Your reach Bananito approximately 20 km south of Limón and another 17 km land inwards. You definitely need a 4-wheel drive car to reach the lodge.

Location:

This ecologically built and managed lodge is located in the hinterland of the Caribbean coast, not far from the huge protected rainforest area La Amistad International Park and with a marvelous view over the surroundings. From Limón you drive south towards Cahuita / Puerto Viejo and Sixaola. After about 20km you see the big sign of the lodge, turn right and drive on to the village of Bananito. From here on the street is getting a little adventurous and you cross several brooks. After about 15km from Bananito you reach the lodge. Shortly before arriving at the lodge you might get to a gate that seems close, but if you have a reservation, this gate will not really be closed and you can open it easily. If you don't like to drive this road on your own, the lodge offers transfers from Bananito (at extra charge). The car can be parked safely in Bananito at a small charge. The lodge can only be reached by 4 x 4 vehicle no matter what time of the year it is.

From San José to Bananito about 3 ½hours. From Bananito to the lodge about 1 hour.

The lodge is an ideal base for many adventurous nature excursions. Bird watching, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and tours to beautiful waterfalls are available. 10% of their profits is donated to a conservation foundation. The restaurant serves local and international dishes and drinks. The lodge does not have electricity; thus dinner is enjoyed by romantic candlelight.

The comfortable bungalows have private bathroom with solar-heated water and a big terrace with hammocks. The superior rooms are larger and offer the best views.

This lodge has been recently remodelled and holds now three different areas and sceneries providing a warm, cosy, upscale environment for guests to feel as comfy as possible. Since Monteverde Country Lodge is located in the heart of the cloud forest, visitors will have the chance to experience the subtropical evergreen mountains – a misty shelter of rare species – and yet have a nice place to rest after exploring the region. Sitting out in their spacious and beautifully landscaped gardens as the sun goes down is a favourite!

Room facilities:

Roomy wood walls accentuate the warm ambience and bridge the interiors to the peace-giving outdoors by reminding you to surround yourself with simple, natural materials. All rooms are kept very clean and can accommodate up to four people. The ones upstairs have a chair in their balconies. They also have a large walk-in shower.

Our opinion:

Accommodating staff and a great location. Typical Costa Rican meals and fusion cuisine are served in the lodge's own restaurant. They help you scheduling walks to the Santa Elena and Monteverde cloud forest reserves as well as arranging canopy, coffee and night tours.
