Rara Avis is a biological station and a lodge, protecting a large part of the rainforest close to Braulio Carillo National Park. The rustic lodge was built in the middle of the jungle, where you can explore the trails and visit a beautiful waterfall. The transfers from Horquetas are operated by Jeep, and that's the only way to reach Rara Avis. 16 rustic rooms and a restaurant belong to the lodge. Please be aware, that you cannot expect much comfort in such a remote paradise. This is a real 'close to nature' experience.

Day 1:

We will pick you up at your hotel in San José for a scenic ride, crossing Braulio Carillo National Park to Horquetas. That's where luggage and passengers will be loaded on a Jeep and the journey continues on a bumpy trail through the jungle. Especially after heavy rainfalls, this transfer is quite an adventurous experience. You will arrive at the lodge for lunch. Enjoy a jungle hike in the afternoon together with one of the local guides. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 2:

On your second day, the local naturalist guides will be happy to take you for an extended hike. You will enjoy an incredible biodiversity and also pass by an idyllic waterfall. Take a refreshing break in the middle of the jungle. In the after noon you have the choice of going for another hike or observing birds near the lodge.

Day 3:

On the third day it's time to load the Jeep again and return to Horquetas and on to San José.

Option 1) with Tortuguero

Instead of driving back to San José, you can book an overnight at Hotel Suerre in Guápiles. The next day, you will be picked up to continue with the Tortuguero package. Please note that the first breakfast is not included in the Tortuguero package in case of this combination.

Option 2) with Selva Bananito Lodge or hotels on the Caribbean coast

Instead of driving back to San José, you can book an overnight at Hotel Suerre in Guápiles. The next day, you will be picked up by the collective bus (Interbus) and drive to Bananito or to any beach hotel on the Caribbean coast.

Option 3) with Laguna del Lagarto Lodge

Instead of driving back to San José, you can book a transfer to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and a night at Hotel La Quinta de Sarapiquí. You will then be picked up by Laguna del Lagarto Lodge the next day.

Option 4) with hotels in La Fortuna

Instead of driving back to San José, you can book a transfer to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and a night at Hotel La Quinta de Sarapiquí. The next day you can book a transfer by collective bus (Interbus) to the hotel of your choice in La Fortuna.
