Laguna del Lagarto Lodge is located in the northern lowlands, 20 km south of the Nicaraguan border and close to San Carlos River. 500 hectares of untouched tropical rainforest belong to the lodge, an ideal place for birdwatchers and hikers. There is a lagoon leading some 400 meters into the jungle and you can use the kayaks to discover this paradise. The lodge also offers boat excursions on San Carlos River, horseback riding or a guided tour through a pepper plantation. 18 rustic and clean rooms with private bathroom and a restaurant / bar are available. This is the perfect spot for nature lovers and especially for birdwatchers!

Day 1:

You will be picked up at your hotel in San José and drive through a scenic landscape to Boca Tapada, where Laguna del Lagarto Lodge is located. The afternoon is at your leisure. Relax in a hammock or enjoy a jungle trip on the lagoon, paddling in a kayak. During your stay, one guided hike through the jungle is included. However, we recommend to do that in the morning, so you will have better chances to see birds. Overnight at the lodge.

Day 2:

The second day, a boat trip on the San Carlos River is included in the package. With a little bit of luck, you can observe birds, crocodiles, sloths, monkeys and turtles. A beautiful flora can also be admired along the riverbanks. Depending on the weather conditions, you can either take this tour in the morning or in the afternoon. During your free time you will once again have the possibility for a walk in the jungle or for discovering the lagoon by kayak. Dinner and overnight.

Day 3:

You still have a few hours at leisure on the third day. After lunch you will be taken back to San José.

Instead of driving back to San José, you can also book a land transfer to La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano, at no extra charge, which will be operated by the lodge.

Option 2) with Rara Avis

Instead of driving back to San José, you can also book a transfer to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí (at no extra charge) or Guápiles (at extra charge, where you book an overnight at La Quinta de Sarapiquí or Hotel Suerre. You will be picked up the next day to start the excursion to Rara Avis.
