The Green Expedition 1 day

This is a full day adventure tour combining volcanos, rainforest trails, a boat ride and even horseback riding all in one fun-filled exciting day. This tour will take you through coffee plantations, ornamental flower plantations and strawberry fields en route to Poas, one of Costa Rica's most impressive volcanos. A short walk among huge plants will lead you to the main crater of 1,3 km diameter. A breathtaking view of the blue lake is revealed, while steam and gas escape from the crater. Afterwards take a 20 minute walk to an idyllic lagoon. From there we will visit the Waterfall Gardens, where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast. The next stop on our route is the butterfly and hummingbird garden and the rainforest trails that lead to the famous La Paz Waterfall. Later we will drive on to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, where you switch to a boat to explore the jungle surrounding the Sarapiquí River. With a little bit of luck you will be able to spot monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, caimans and much more. After lunch you can go for a short horse riding tour or a walk through the rainforest, or you can decide to visit a frog sanctuary. The way back to San José passes through the impressive Braulio Carrillo National Park.

That's the place where the first Spanish settlers built their homes, and you will visit the old church before heading back to San José.

Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica

Arenal Volcano 1 day

Arenal Volcano is one of the most widely recognised Costa Rican landmarks and you shouldn't miss visiting this impressive mountain of fire. However, it is quite a long journey to drive to Arenal Volcano and back, all on the same day. This excursion suits those who only have a very limited time to explore Costa Rica. Those who have more time should plan at least one overnight stay in the area. (see Arenal tour options) En route along the scenic drive to La Fortuna we will stop and visit the well-known Tabacón Hotsprings, from where you can watch the active crater of Arenal Volcano. You will have time to relax for a while and at an additional charge you can also enjoy a relaxing massage. Later we will return to San José. Note: Arenal Volcano may be covered by clouds and you may only be able to hear the rumbling eruptions. However, visiting the hot springs is a very relaxing experience, too. People who stay in the area overnight have better chance to see the erruptions against the night sky.

Aerial Tram, Costa Rica

Rainforest Aerial Tram 1 day

The rainforest aerial tram that takes you through the canopy of the jungle has become a well-known attraction of Costa Rica. The leading biologist Donald Perry, who specialized in researching the jungle canopy, had the idea to enable non-biologists to get a glimpse of this secretive world that is rately seen by humans, except with the help of devices such as this aerial tram.
This tour mainly focuses on plants. It is relatively unlikely that you will see many animals. Silent kayaking on little jungle rivers is much better for that.
Departure time depends on the location of your hotel in San José. You will drive through Braulio Carillo National Park and reach the aerial tram approximately after 1 hour. First, you will get an introductory talk about the construction of the tramway, and afterwards you will enjoy a 1 ½ hours ride through the rainforest canopy. Each cabin has space for 5 people and a guide. After returning to the base you can hike trough the jungle, accompanied by a naturalist guide. Breakfast or lunch will be served at the restaurant of the Rainforest Aerial Tram base station.

InBio Park, Costa Rica

INBio Park ½ day

Costa Rica's National Biodiverstiy Institute, INBio, is a not-for-profit, scientific association. INBio's mission is to educate the population about the incredible value of Costa Rica's biodiversity and to promote conservation all over the country. INBio is highly respected throughout the world for its very complete collections and archives of insects and plants. The INBio Park has been established in 1999 near the village of Santo Domingo de Heredia. It provides a great introduction to the National Parks of Costa Rica. Visitors will watch a video about the natural history of Central America and why people started to destroy the jungle and how we can protect what is left today. The tour continues to a second building, where local guides will explain the important role of biodiversity in many fields of research, and nowhere more so than in pharmacy. In a third building, you will get an introduction to the National Park system of Costa Rica. Later you can admire the collections of important plants, collected in different types of rainforest ecosystems.

Whitewater Rafting Sarapiqui, Costa Rica

White Water Rafting Río Sarapiquí Class II - III 1 day

An active nature adventure. Early in the morning we will pick you up at you hotel and drive approximately 2 ½ hours to the river put-in. We will stop along the way to have breakfast at a nice little restaurant serving traditional tico fare. We continue to the place where the boats are already waiting for us. After a short safety briefing you will rig your raft and begin the journey downriver. Winding through the region characterized by "the Eternal Spring", this river course lets you enjoy some of Costa Rica's lushest and most verdant scenery. Its origins are high up, where it begun as clear mountain streams that tumble down through thick rainforest where eventually they join together in the crystal waters of the beautiful Sarapiquí. Lush vegetation dangles right down to the riverbank. Box Lunch will be served along the way. Take out will be in the afternoon, after about 14km, where you can have a shower and change into dry clothes before your return to San José.

Whitewater Rafting Pacuare, Costa Rica

White Water Rafting Río Pacuare Class III - IV 1 day

We will picked you up at your hotel in San José and depart on a scenic drive via Cartago to Paraíso, where we will stop for a typical tico breakfast. 2 ½ hours later we will arrive at Pacuare River, where you receive a safety briefing about the rafting trip ahead. This section of Pacuare River has some class III and VI rapids and it is important to work as a team on board the rafts. Pacuare is regarded as one of the 10 most beautiful rafting rivers in the world and you will soon be able to confirm that. From beginning to end you find yourself surrounded by jungle. Lunch will be served on the riverbanks before you continue this refreshing adventure. Depending on the water level the rafting trip takes 3 ½ - 4 hours and finishes near Siquirres, where you take out the rafts. Changing rooms and showers are available at the take-out point and you must bring a set of dry clothes on this trip. After a well-deserved drink, you will drive back to San José, crossing the Braulio Carillo National Park.

Mountain Biking "Volcano Route" 1 day

We will pick you up at your hotel in San José and drive towards Irazú Volcano which reaches an altitude of 3.432m above sea level. Here you will get on your bikes and begin your route, heading towards the Turrialba Volcano with spectacular view points of the surrounding mountains. During the trip you will pass coffee plantations, and farm land. The Turrialba area is known for its cattle ranches. The route will end in Turrialba, at "El Puente de la Alegría", the "Bridge of Joy", where you will enjoy a tasty lunch at a typical tico restaurant. You will return to San José by bus.
Route: Total length 44km. 4km downhill from Irazú Volcano, 17km on gravel road with swings and steep hills, 23km on paved road with steep hills.

Mountain Biking "Pejibaye River Route" 1 day

We will pick you up at your hotel in San José and drive towards the city of Cartago, former capital of Costa Rica. From there we continue to Cervantes, where you can enjoy breakfast at a local restaurant. The biking tour starts at "Angostura" hydroelectric plant. You will bike through sugarcane and coffee fields. The route is first flat, then passing a mountain segment with dense jungle and uphill. You will pass two rivers. One of them will be crossed via a bridge, the second one is shallow, but rocky and hard to bike, but challengers try to cross it without falling. The others pass over a second bridge. You arrive at the village of Pejibaye, from where you continue on a flat gravel road to "La Posa", a natural pool formed by Pejibaye River. Here, you can refresh yourself by taking a dip. After that, you continue on the gravel road to the village of Tucurrique. The road is steep and requires a lot of energy. The support van will be available all that time, in case you want to refill your water bottle or wish to stop biking at this point of the trip. If you decide not to continue by bike, you can continue in the van. After finishing the route, the van will take you to "La Casona del Cafetal", a restaurant situated amidst of a coffee plantation, which will serve us a delicious lunch.
Note: Bring extra clothes to change into, shoes and a towel.
