Discover Pumalin Park, Patagonia, Chile

Pumalin Park was originally established as a private conservation initiative. It protects more than 700000 ha of temperate rain forest in northern Patagonia and is known as one of the most diverse areas of native tree species, as previously there were no roads in this region that could have served to exploit this ancient forest. Initially this private initiative met with suspicion and opposition, but by now it has won the approval of the Chilean government. There are many well marked long and short trails. Some lead to the Cascadas Escondidas waterfalls, or to an area of very ancient and impressive Alerce trees. Pumalin Park is by far the best area where such ancient native forests can be explored in Chile as it comprises such a large area sloping down from the western Andes to the Carretera Austral. The park is not off-limits to agriculture, but agricultural activities have been converted to organic farming techniques, which protect the integrity of the ecosystem and also produce excellent quality organic produce for the park lodges. A nursery for native tree species and a center for apiculture has also been established.
