Trail of the Cathars, part 2 - Quillan to Foix

cathartrailmarker (32K)From the Mediterranean to the Pyrenees Ariégeoises, in the heart of the sun blessed Corbieres region, or between Montsegur and Foix you can find the secret trails and castles of the chateaux Cathares. These castles are the remnants of a tragic, political and religious intrigue. The Cathars were gnostic Christian sect, which enjoyed great popularity in the South of France during the Middle Ages. Political jealousies stirred the first crusade - Christians pitched against Christians in a bloody war for power and control over this culturally rich region. The Cathars eventually were exterminated, their castles burnt down and many of them died at the stake. But their spiritual legacy lives on in this mystical region and their castles bear silent witness to their sad fate. Their legendary treasures were never discovered and treasure hunters are still looking for it today.

This walking tour combines a historical interest that stirs the imagination, as well as some memorable walking through lush, unspoilt mountains and valleys.
